Do you remember many years ago back in the 1980’s the little sunshine happy smile face? It was posted everywhere and it did “spread a little sunshine” into thousands of lives young and old. How can one little icon instantly change the attitudes of so many? Because it ignited something lost in all of us. Joy!
How difficult is it to smile? Our society has become engulfed by devices, smart phones, tablets, x-boxes etc. It saddens me to sit in a lovely restaurant and view all the patrons with heads bowed down starring at their devices and not even speaking to the ones they are sharing the table with, pounding away on their screens, necks stretched so far that clearly a trip to the chiropractor is in order. If only people would stop, start talking again to one another and share some joy and hope.
Just the other day I was at the supermarket checking out. The cashier handed over my receipt and I noticed there were 6 people behind me all with blank somber looks on their faces. I looked into the eyes of the cashier and said, “Mahalo (thank you in Hawaiian), soon I’ll be able to say, Happy Holidays!” Everyone lit up like a Christmas tree and smiled to one another. The entire energy changed just like that. The cashier had a huge grin on her face and replied, “Oh yes, that’s true. Can’t wait.”
Smile to strangers on the street. Say hello and goodbye. Open a door for strangers and let them go through before you. If you do this, you too will spread a little sunshine, and those who receive it may begin to spread some too. It’s just that simple.
